NOFMA's Haggard speaks about merger with NWFA
Bob Haggard, president of NOFMA, spoke to NFT recently about having his more than 100-year-old organization become part of the National Wood Flooring Association. He said the merger was in the works for a little more than a year and was necessary to ensure NOFMA would not lose its "brand awareness," particularly its grading and certification system.

Looking to the year ahead (and putting this one behind us)
Greetings.
First off: Happy Holidays from
the staff of National Floor Trends.
With only a couple of weeks left in the year, many
in the flooring industry are eager to say good riddance to 2008. We are
all looking forward to a new year that will bring a new outlook and new
opportunities. I think it is safe to say we all have had enough of the
gloomy economic news that will forever be associated with the year now
drawing to a close.

Bellbridge and middle school students test wool's 'planter' properties
Bellbridge Carpets, a Wools of New Zealand Brand partner based in Benicia, Calif., recently worked with students at the nearby Harvest Park Middle School in Pleasanton to test the ecological properties of recycled wool carpet. The school's Ecology Club designed an experiment to measure plant growth when cocoa fiber and recycled Bellbridge carpet were used as liners for the planters. It became quickly apparent the wool-lined planters helped create much healthier flowers.

Mohawk Offers Floorscapes Dealers CustomWeave Boutique
KISSIMMEE, FLA. -- Mohawk used the annual convention of its Floorscapes dealers here to roll out a new store-within-a-store boutique concept centered on the relaunch of the company's CustomWeave line. Mohawk officials assured dealers on hand for the 10th annual meeting that the new initiative will help emphasize value over price, which they said was crucial to surviving the economic downturn.

Greenbuild: Environmentally friendly flooring, and beyond
Greenbuild touched down in Boston Nov. 19-21 for a show that offered
some of the latest "green" products and services available. The event
covered virtually every segment of the construction industry, from
flooring to plumbing to roofing and beyond. It was a reminder that
flooring is only one of many important components that goes into making
a green building "green."

NeoCon East vp: 'Green', gov't two keys to commercial success
The sixth annual NeoCon East show, held recently in Baltimore, was a success as far as show organizers are concerned. While attendance was flat (approximately 8,000 show goers, which is comparable to last year numbers), the number of exhibitors rose by 7 percent to 302. Additionally, the show included 48 seminars and association forums -- more educational courses "than ever before," organizers noted.

"Extreme and unprecedented challenges"
That is the way a top exec at USG described the current environment last week during a conference call with reporters. Of course we are all aware of the sour economy, but "unprecedented" is still a mighty powerful word. It suggests we have entered uncharted territory.

The bright side of tough times
Seemingly everywhere you look is more bad news about the economy; not
only are stock prices whipping up and down like a yo-yo in the hands of
a distracted child, but the U.S. shed 159,000 jobs last month, the
biggest decline in five years. It might seem like the economy is headed
into a terrible decline, but believe it or not, there is a silver
lining. Several of them, in fact.

Flooring industry rallies to help its colleagues
The Certified Floorcovering Installers group recently sent a message to its members outlining the health of certain installers in the industry. Included in the message was the news that Jodi BlueJacket of Installation Management Services in Texas, a longtime member who has been "instrumental in developing the donations in those who encounter diffult times," is suffering from cancer.
