J.H. Freed's Chris Freed reflects on 30 years

San Diego, Calif.-based J.H. Freed & Sons is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a range of sales specials and discounts throughout June. Specials include “Milliken Mondays,” “Click 2sdays” (for Marmoleum Click 2 products), “Wild Card Wednesdays” (for accessories), “Thirty Thursdays” (a $30 delivery charge on orders) and “Flexitec Fridays.”

"Particularly with the challenging market over the last couple of years, reaching 30 is a really important milestone," says Chris Freed, president of the distributor.

He also says the down economy has an upside as well. "I helped my parents start the business in May 1979. I've been here since the beginning, and I've been through multiple recessions," he explains. "I see this one as a bump in the road, an opportunity to make changes and introduce new products. Basically, bringing in things to tell a more differentiating story to our customers."

One example of that is the addition of bamboo pole panels and bamboo garden edging to the company's product mix. "What we're doing right now is outside the box thinking," Freed notes, adding that the new products have the potential to bring J.H. Freed & Sons to a whole new market.

"Our company started as a 100 percent carpet distributor just serving San Diego. It's evolved into a full line distributor. Today we're servicing all of Southern California, Southern Nevada, and just recently the state of Arizona," Freed says with evident pride. "Today, the company is still a family distributorship. Both my brother and my wife work in the business."
