MLB All-Star Parade:
The Red Carpet was 'Green'
(Thanks to Bentley Prince Street)
With the exception of an occasional story on new developments in artificial turf, we seldom get to write about baseball in NFT. So it is a thrill to recognize a floor covering company that hit a homer during the All-Star Game Festivities in New York recently.
Los Angeles-based Bentley Prince Street (BPS) cobbled together 95,000 sq. ft. of red carpet and rolled it out along New York's Sixth Ave. for 18 blocks. The occasion was the All-Star Parade held a day before the game at Yankee Stadium. Already people are speculating that it may have been the longest red carpet ever unfurled.
That, in and of itself, is impressive but there is a lot more to the story. As the president of BPS Anthony Minite points out, the carpet was not only one of the longest ever seen; it is believed to be one of the "greenest." Apart from using sustainable materials, it was also made using alternative energy sources.
"We're excited to have the opportunity to create a first-of-its-kind two mile long 'green' carpet, made with 100% recycled fiber and 100% renewable electrical energy," said Minite. "None of this carpet will ever wind up in a landfill. After the event, all 45,000 pounds of carpet will be recycled into new carpet."
This is the type of initiative that calls attention to our industry's environmental efforts. It also underscores a commitment that has been a fundamental aspect of the flooring business for many years. I confess, I also have personal reasons for congratulating Anthony Minite and all the people at BPS
. Not only did they add to the pageantry of the All-Star Parade; they gave me an excuse to write about baseball in our e-Newsletter. Thanks again, Bentley Prince Street.

Mohawk 'largest user' of Dow's green backing
Mohawk said it is the largest user of residential carpet backing made
using Dow Chemical Co.'s LOMAX Technology. This technology, introduced
last year, uses captured methane gas from landfills instead of fossil
fuelsto produce latex. According to Dow, the process reduces carbon
dioxide emissions by "approximately 27 million pounds annually --
comparable to keeping 2,300 cars off the road ... or more than 200,000
barrels of oil annually."

Hiring Installers: Things to Look For (And Look Out For)

Not long ago a flooring

The contractor assured me the workload is such that there is plenty to do and
he is prepared to pay a premium price for a qualified worker. But finding
someone who meets his expectations has proven extremely difficult.
