04 Oct Proper Care and Maintenance of Your Wood Fence
Since you paid a lot of money for your fence, doing what is necessary in terms of wood fence maintenance is important. Wood is what it is, and you know that it needs to be cared for properly, and this needs to be known before you buy it. What you will need to do is stain it again after a few years, and of course, washing it down is recommended. But that’s only if you have a stain on it already, or you want to apply the first stain to it.
You should do a few important things beforehand if you want to stain your fence, or renew the stain that is already present. First, you want to avoid uneven application of the stain or even paint if you want to paint it. If you like, you can call up a contractor or visit one and ask more about this or other things you can do such as painting the fence. Weather will include the temperature and humidity which is similar to painting your indoor rooms in your house, and be very sure that you read, understand, and follow the directions on the can. You may not think that it matters to read the instructions for using the stain, and this is a common mistake since many people think applying stain is just like painting.
Eventually, you will need to do some small parts replacement on a wood fence, but there are plenty of reasons why pickets and even posts can become damaged. There is nothing wrong with making your own wooden replacement pieces, and at times a picket fence is at a higher risk.
So while you are making a new piece for your fence, then just enjoy the process and you can do this pretty quickly. Of course, this may be out of the skill set you have, but you can still hire a contractor carpenter or cabinet maker who knows about this.
Care needs to be taken when removing dirt and other matter from a wood fence because you have to remember there is stain on it. There are some exceptions you may wish to take which can deviate from the scheduled maintenance. Bleach and water in a solution that is not too strong are recommended, and in this way you are sure to kill any mold formation. The main thought when using this approach is that bleach should not be in an amount that is greater than water, and then this will do the job and also avoid caustic damage to stain. On the other hand, you may be averse to the application of bleach and introduction to the environment which it surely will cause.
Create the maintenance plans and techniques that you know are right for your fence and will help you maintain it as it should be. It is easy to become complacent about these things, and that is one of the dangers you have to avoid. The best way to make it a habit is to be organized and keep a fence maintenance log.
